With many book-to-TV adaptations coming our way, ComicYears.com’s own Emily O’Donnell is here to break it all down for us. One of the new upcoming adaptations is HBO Max’s Station Eleven. Set in the future, the show is based on the best-selling novel from Emily St. John Mandel, about how society is destroyed, but hope is alive, and they attempt to rebuild. The post-apocalyptic show’s costume designer, Helen Huang, sits down with Emily to discuss the new show, her experience and how she brought life to the characters using their costumes. Check out this Station Eleven interview podcast for a behind-the-scenes look into the new series.

HBO Max’s New Series Looks Interesting

Out now on HBO Max, Station Eleven is about how a pandemic starts and ravages the world. The story looks to intercut between two time periods with the main character as a child, and then a grown woman. The story and performances look wonderful. But why also stands out is the design of the show, its aesthetic and vibe and the costumes.

So, it’s a great opportunity to hear the thoughts of the show’s costume designer, Helen Huang. On this Station Eleven interview podcast, she discusses how she incorporated the elements of the story into the costumes themselves. Check out the episode for a lot more behind-the-scenes tidbits about the new show.

Station Eleven Interview Podcast

Our Book Editor Emily O’Donnell starts off the conversation by digging into Helen’s background and how she came to Station Eleven. Helen discusses how she came to costume design through the arts, and how those skills transfer into her current role. Emily and Helen discuss the nuances of styling clothes for characters in a world where things are depressing and worn down. It’s a lot more complicated and nuanced than you’d think, which is why it’s so interesting to hear the thoughts of a costume designer for a series such as this, where so much of the experience is atmosphere and the vibe.
